Have I mentioned my hatred for text messages before? I feel like I'm telling everybody these days, as people start using them more and more. They are awful.

This does not mean I do not find them useful, because they can be. Trying to get a message to multiple people? Text messages let you do that! Communicating with someone in a loud place, or you are in a loud place? Use a text message! They are also great for communicating with people who are traveling via T (or subway), because of reception issues. And if you have exactly one thing to tell someone, and it doesn't require a response, a text message is a perfectly acceptable form of communication.

BUT! I do not want to have a conversation via text messages. It's time consuming and costly - pick up the damn phone and have a 45 second conversation. I also do not want to receive a text message from someone in the same room as me. It's stupid. If you think I'm in the car, driving, a text message is not the ideal way to communicate with me - I think it's much safer to answer my phone than to look at a text message. And let's not even get into how I'm going to respond to you (I'm not stupid enough to type a text message while driving - I'm going to call, which means you should have called me in the first place). Plus, my "friends" at Verizon Wireless like to raise the price on text messages without any notification (if you don't have a text message plan, you might have noticed the increase from $.10 to $.15 a few months ago). And the icing on the cake occurred yesterday - text message spam! Grrr....

I recognize that most people now have text message packages that let them send unlimited (or nearly that) messages every month, and they have cute this phones with QWERTY keyboards. Good for you. But I don't have one of those phones (nor do I want one) or a text message plan (and I don't want one of those, either). I'm fine with many other forms of communication - AIM, Google Chat, email, as well as a simple, quick phone conversation (I promise I'm not going to keep you on the line forever) - why can't I get the point across that I'd like to keep my text messages to a minimum?
