Once upon a time, I used to make an effort to go to different restaurants in the Boston area, in an effort to try out as many as possible. It feels like it’s been awhile (in reality, I guess it hasn’t – Corinne and I went to an Italian restaurant at the beginning of January that at least I hadn’t been to before), so Corinne and I went out last night. After a little bit of research – neither of us wanted to spend a fortune – we settled on Teatro. Teatro is located on Tremont Street, right next to the movie theatre and across the the Boston Common, which meant that it was super convenient for both us (on our way back to the T!). We both thought our meal was really great, and I enjoyed the décor as well, particularly the ceiling. One of the nice things about the restaurant is that they sell some of their appetizers, entrees and wines in half portions (for the wine, a carafe is half a bottle) at pretty much half the price as the full portion – so you don’t feel like you’re being cheated by getting a smaller size. Corinne and I ordered a carafe of 2003 McManis Family Cabernet Sauvignon, which was fantastic (and I’m not normally drawn to cabs). We both got a small mixed green salad with small tomatoes and red wine vinaigrette – again, fantastic. I also went with a small orecchiette with sausage and broccoli rabe, and Corinne chose what was basically a Margherita pizza – and we both loved those, as well. For dessert we split vanilla panne cotta with mixed berries – yum. We were both particularly impressed at the serving sizes, even though a lot of the things we ordered were the half portions. And for all that, our bill came to $74 (including tax and tip), which I don’t think is that bad at all!
So there you go – I’m not a restaurant critic (though even Phantom Gourmet gave it an 87 – but I would recommend Teatro if you’re looking for a nice meal in downtown Boston (perhaps before a movie?). :-)
